Computer Power Supply (PSU) Troubleshooting and Solutions

The Power Supply Unit (PSU) is the main device that provides the power needed to operate a computer. When there is a fault here, the entire computer may malfunction or the hardware may be damaged.

1. Symptoms that indicate a faulty Power Supply

* No response when turning on the computer (Power On).

* Random Shutdowns after a short time after turning on the computer.

* Strange noises (Whining/Grinding noise) heard from inside the computer when turning on.

* A burnt smell or smoke coming from the computer.

* Frequent Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors.

2. Common Errors and Causes

* Overheating: This occurs due to the fan in the PSU not working or being clogged with dust.

 * Voltage Fluctuations: Changes in the power supply at home can cause the capacitors inside the PSU to explode or fail.

* Overloading: The amount of wattage provided by the PSU is not enough for the hardware connected to the computer (e.g. high-end GPU).

3. How to test the power supply?

There are a few simple steps you can follow to see if your PSU is bad:

* Check the cables: Check if the power cable is properly connected and if there are any breaks.

* Paper Clip Test: Disconnect the PSU from the motherboard and connect the green wire and black wire of the 24-pin connector with a wire to see if only the PSU is working (it is best to have someone with technical knowledge do this).

 * Multimeter test: You can use a multimeter to check whether the voltage output from the PSU (12V, 5V, 3.3V) is correct.

4. Solutions and safety measures

* Cleaning: Remove dust from the PSU and make sure that the fan is spinning properly.

* Surge Protector / UPS use: Use a UPS to protect yourself from lightning strikes or sudden power changes.

* Choosing a suitable PSU: Choose a good brand PSU (80 Plus Certified) with a capacity higher than the wattage required by your computer components.

පරිගණකයක ක්‍රියාකාරිත්වයට අවශ්‍ය විදුලිය ලබාදෙන ප්‍රධාන උපාංගය වන්නේ Power Supply Unit (PSU) එකයි. මෙහි දෝෂයක් ඇති වූ විට මුළු පරිගණකයම අක්‍රිය වීමට හෝ දෘඩාංග (Hardware) වලට හානි වීමට ඉඩ ඇත.

1. Power Supply එකක දෝෂ සහිත බව පෙන්වන ලක්ෂණ

 * පරිගණකය පණගැන්වීමේදී (Power On) කිසිදු ප්‍රතිචාරයක් නොදැක්වීම.

 * පරිගණකය ක්‍රියාත්මක වී ටික වේලාවකින් ඉබේම අක්‍රිය වීම (Random Shutdowns).

 * පරිගණකය පණගැන්වීමේදී ඇතුළතින් අමුතු ශබ්ද (Whining/Grinding noise) ඇසීම.

 * පරිගණකයෙන් පිළිස්සුණු ගඳක් (Burnt smell) හෝ දුමාරයක් පිටවීම.

 * නිතර නිතර Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) දෝෂ පෙන්වීම.

2. පොදු දෝෂ සහ හේතු

 * Overheating (අධික ලෙස රත් වීම): PSU එකේ ඇති විදුලි පංකාව (Fan) ක්‍රියා නොකිරීම හෝ දූවිලි පිරීම නිසා මෙය සිදුවේ.

 * Voltage Fluctuations (විදුලි සැපයුමේ අස්ථාවර බව): නිවසේ විදුලි සැපයුමේ ඇතිවන වෙනස්කම් නිසා PSU එක ඇතුළත ඇති Capacitors පිපිරීම හෝ නරක් වීම සිදුවිය හැක.

 * Overloading (වැඩි ධාරිතාවක් ලබාගැනීමට උත්සාහ කිරීම): පරිගණකයට සම්බන්ධ කර ඇති දෘඩාංග වලට (උදා: High-end GPU) PSU එකෙන් ලබාදෙන වොට් ප්‍රමාණය (Wattage) ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවීම.

3. Power Supply එක පරීක්ෂා කරන්නේ කෙසේද?

ඔබේ PSU එක නරක් වී ඇත්දැයි බැලීමට සරල පියවර කිහිපයක් අනුගමනය කළ හැක:

 * Cables පරීක්ෂා කිරීම: Power cable එක නිසියාකාරව සම්බන්ධ වී ඇත්දැයි සහ එහි කැඩීම් පවතීදැයි බලන්න.

 * Paper Clip Test: PSU එක මවු පුවරුවෙන් (Motherboard) ගලවා, එහි ඇති 24-pin connector එකේ කොළ පැහැති වයරය සහ කළු පැහැති වයරයක් කම්බියකින් සම්බන්ධ කර PSU එක පමණක් ක්‍රියාත්මක වේදැයි බැලීම (මෙය තාක්ෂණික දැනුමක් ඇති අයෙකු ලවා කරවා ගැනීම වඩාත් සුදුසුයි).

 * Multimeter පරීක්ෂාව: PSU එකෙන් පිටවන වෝල්ටීයතාවය (12V, 5V, 3.3V) නිවැරදිදැයි මල්ටිමීටරයක් මගින් පරීක්ෂා කළ හැක.

4. විසඳුම් සහ ආරක්ෂිත පියවර

 * පිරිසිදු කිරීම: PSU එකේ ඇති දූවිලි ඉවත් කර විදුලි පංකාව හොඳින් කැරකෙන බව තහවුරු කරගන්න.

 * Surge Protector / UPS භාවිතය: විදුලි කෙටීම් හෝ හදිසි විදුලි වෙනස්වීම් වලින් ආරක්ෂා වීමට UPS එකක් භාවිතා කරන්න.

 * ගැලපෙන PSU එකක් තෝරාගැනීම: ඔබේ පරිගණකයේ උපාංග වලට අවශ්‍ය වොට් ප්‍රමාණයට වඩා වැඩි ධාරිතාවයකින් යුත්, හොඳ Brand එකක PSU එකක් (80 Plus Certified) තෝරාගන්න.

> සැලකිය යුතුයි: Power Supply එකක් ඇතුළත ඉහළ විදුලි ධාරිතාවක් ගබඩා වී තිබිය හැකි බැවින්, ඒ පිළිබඳ නිසි දැනුමක් නොමැතිව එය ගැලවීම හෝ අලුත්වැඩියා කිරීමට උත්සාහ කිරීම අනතුරුදායක විය හැක.
